ABSTRACT
This project on “Analyses of the effect of Boss/Secretary Relationship on Staff Management and Productivity in Selected Establishment in Owerri Imo State”. The secretary plays the role of improving the quality of relationship between her boss and all the members of the organization. The main objective of this project is to enable the readers at large to have full understanding of the secretary role and executive role in organization. This work was divided into five chapters and preliminary pages and appendix for certification.

Chapter one gave a background of the entire work, purpose of the study, statement of the problem, significance of the study scope of the study. Research question. Chapter two dealt with literature review, which was grouped under the following headings, the positive effect of Boss/Secretary relationship. The negative effect of Boss/Secretary relationship, the measures aimed at improving Boss/Secretary relationship, the role of the executive, the role of the Secretary. Chapter three dealt with the steps taken by the researcher in the order in which they were carried out, highlighting the basic research design, instrument of the study, population of the study, validation of instrument, method of data collection, method of data analyses.

Data collected were analyzed in chapter four using distribution tables and tested using mean method and also the discussion of the findings were made. In chapter five, the summary, recommendation and conclusion were made.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    BACKGROUND OF STUDY

From the creation, man has been a social being.  He could not afford to stay alone, hence God created for him a helpmate.  From then on, man has come to rely on interactions with his fellow men and his environment for survival and achievement of his aims for life to be meaningful, he has to relate to others by way of communication and be responsive as well as in order to impart his ideas and feelings.  The boss is not an exception, he has to relate positively with his secretary in order to accomplish the organizational goals and objectives.

In the modern organization, the importance of the boss/secretary relationship as it affect staff management and productivity cannot be over stressed.  This is so because, the two personalities are the pivot around which the functions of the organization revolves.

The boss/secretary relationship in the right perspective and context could be seen as a mutual bond, binding the boss and the secretary I their quest for effective staff management and increased productivity, aimed at accomplishing the organizational set goals.  According to Hanna, Pohem and Tilton (1973) a secretary is an assistant to an executive, possessing mastery of office skills and ability to assume responsibility without direct supervision, who displays initiative, exercise judgment and makes decision within the scope of her authority her.
