  1. 1.0Introduction
  2. 1.1Background of the Study

Many problems confront parents and teachers who are engaged in sex education of their students. Among these problems is the prominent one of the adoption by parents of passive attitude towards sex education of their children.

Senior Secondary school student’s attitude towards sex education differs from one group to another depending on many factors such as dominant perception held in different communities, social belief, peer group, religious factors, family socialization and cultural setup within which theses students grew up.

These factors either combine or separated, in influencing the attitude of senior secondary school students. Students view sex education either positively or negatively, to some, It is seen as a solution to problems surrounding teenagers such as lack of knowledge in contraception which sometime result in an unplanned pregnancy. Sometimes lack of knowledge leads to infection of diseases like HIV and AIDs. According to Naidoo-(2001), the 1996 figures indicated that in South Africa 3.3% (158-298) of male and 11.7% 9502-719) of females in 15-24 years-age-grade are HIV positive, otherwise view sex education as a problem that is immoral to the eyes of the elderly people and primitive rural community at large. Therefore, it is perceived as one of those social forces that came with modernization which break down the essence of moral fabric of the entire society.

In rural setting, some people still believe that sex education is equivalent to social taboo that might lead to social snobbery on the part of those teachers who resort to it; as a result, teachers and parents do not welcome open and frank discussion about sex education, so the students turn for advice and guidance to peers and other siblings.
