INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Indecent appearance has come to characterised the dress pattern of many students on the campuses of higher learning in Nigeria. There is hardly any higher institution of learning that is not faced with this nauseating problem. There are different modes of dressing around the world reflecting the various available cultures. A particular mode of dressing can be used to identify a certain society as a people. But regrettably, in the present day society, dressing reflecting people’s cultural background and scriptural admonition have been thrown to the dogs. Thus, because of the variation in the diverse cultural modes of dressing, peers who feel or find out that their dressing habit is “out-of-place” are likely to be affected in terms of their dressing behaviour.
However, it is very common these days to see people of both sexes particularly young person, mostly students of higher institutions of learning dressing indecently and abnormally. These can be buttressed by such dresses that expose people’s bust, chest, abdominal parts, arm, buttocks, and other sensitive parts. This form of dressing is provocative (Olori, 2003).
Peer as a concept can be described as a person of the same age, status or ability as another specified person. On a second note, peer group is a community in which most of or all of the members have roughly the same characteristics such as age, class, education, merit, rank, standing or status.
Peer group relationship is effective and more objective when members share common features and characteristics such as;
ü Common interest
ü Belonging to the same age group
ü Sharing common values
ü Influencing of each other’s decision
ü Rendering assistance (this could be either financial or performing other tasks
ü Providing useful suggestions and advice to one another when in a challenging condition (Articlebase.com, 2011)
The advantages and disadvantages of peer relationship would be better emphasised on the basis of peer group classification. Hence, peer group can be either classified as:
Positive peer group is that sort of group that influence or gets people involved in things that they can feel good about and makes them feel good about themselves.
Negative peer group on the other hand, is that form of peer group that influence members badly because of the kind of pressure. This group usually do not think of the effect or consequences of their activities.
The advantages of peer group can therefore be summarised as:
Provision of a common ground and support system needed to make a healthy and successful relationship, enhances and develops a sense of trust and reliance between members, because members of a peer group are of the same age demographically, thy share same perspective on life, which is conducive to working together, they lack enhance understanding of one another’s behaviour and makes provision for better learning and development of skills.
