ABSTRACT

 

This study aimed at investigating the influence of teachers’ characteristics and job attitude on teaching effectiveness among secondary school teachers in Ikot Ekpene Education Zone, Akwa Ibom State. to achieve this aim, eight hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The instruments used in the study were two sets of questionnaire teachers’ Job Attitude and Teachers’ Teaching Effectiveness Questionnaire (TTEQ) which was administered to three hundred (300) teachers and one thousand two hundred (1200) students, randomly selected from thirty-six public secondary schools in the study area. The hypotheses were tested by the use of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and independent t-test. Each hypothesis was a significant influence of age on teachers’ teaching effectiveness, there was no significance influence of gender, and teachers’ educational qualifications on their teaching effectiveness, there was no significant influence of years of experience on teachers’ teaching effectiveness. While teachers’ attitude towards students discipline, preparation of lessons notes and evaluation of students showed no significant influence on teachers’ teaching effectiveness, teachers’ attitude towards teaching job showed a significant influence on their teaching effectiveness. Based on these findings some recommendations were made with a view to improving the attitude of teachers towards effective teaching in our secondary schools
