CHAPTER ONE

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Hotel Industry is defined as the establishment responsible for provision of food, drinks and accommodation to guests who are willing to pay for services rendered to them and who are in the state to be received. It occupies a significant place in industrial sector of Nigeria and the world at large. It provides job opportunity, foreign exchange as well as helping in the light of all these that every country likes to manage its hotel industry well to enhance the hotel development.

System of management can be simple or complex matters in this prevailing economic depression of our country. In helping to develop hotel industries in Nigeria, government establishment catering schools. Commerce and tourism commission set up its standard, which every catering school must meet in terms of grading and classification. There are also designed courses for instructions in hotel industries both at local and international levels. All these were made to address the problem of hotel industries in the country. But despite all these, a lot of problems persisted.

There were cases of gross qualified personnel and poor human relations. As a result of these problems, government in its effort to encourage hotel development, decided in conjunction with National Board For Technical Education (NABTE). And International Training Fund (ITF), to encourage the introduction of hotel management courses at advance level. Despite these efforts by the government, it was discovered that these problems continued to exist. These therefore, form the basis for this study with a critical look at Modotels Hotel Limited Enugu.

 PROBLEM (S) OF THE STUDY

Hotel industries account for a large proportion of individual (guest) in this country and are faced with numerous problems. These problems hinder the growth and development of hotel industries in this country, thereby limiting their potential contributions to the development of this nations economy. However, the hotel industries have many roles they play in the economic development of less developed country like Nigeria, of course they remain important in the economies. The problems of hotel industries are lack of funds by the proprietors and the difficulty they encounter in raising funds.

Due to limited capital at their disposal and high interest rate of banks, they find it less attractive going to the banks for loan. The level of education of most hotel proprietors imposes difficulty in managerial incapacity. Many even go into business without any training in the area. Lack of technology and operation problems confronting hotel industries makes it difficult for them to grow.

    improve their activities?

RESEARCH OF THE STUDY

For effective research and convenience purposes, the scope of this research has been delimited and is strictly confined to the management problems and prospects of Nigerian hotels. A good management of Nigerian hotels can enormously result in the improved economy of the country. The study area is limited to Modotels Hotel will be interviewed.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

Considering the importance of the problems in this research, the findings are expected to be of great importance to guide hotel managers and proprietors on effective hotel management and to enhance their performance. It will also be of guide on how to handle complex matters.

DEFINITION OF IMPORTANT TERMS

NBTE: National Board for Technical Education. This is a certificate of recognition awarded by technical colleges and commercial school. The above body specializes in manpower development

I.T.F: International Training Funds. This is a recognized International body that helps in training the workers. They also invest money into industries for upliftment of the industrialization of the country.

GUEST: These refer to personalities that patronize the hotel industries for a purpose. They are also customers to the hotel.

PROPRIETORS: Hotel owners or any other business that is owned by one man.

MANAGERIAL INCAPABILITY: This refers to the incapability to manage properly by managers. The causes of this may be as a result of utterance or inadequate funds.

INSTRUCTORS:  These refer to hotel operators
