INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Corporate social responsibility and community development in all its shades is a fast growing concept with little attention paid to its linguistic undertake. It is not common in the literature and in practice, for corporate social responsibility and community development discourses to be every constructed along such moral ends. According to Carroll, the states that:

Despite the need for business to be morally conducted, one of the primary concerns in corporate social responsibility and community development debates is whether organizations pursue it for economic reasons or simply because doing so has intrinsic merit (Carroll, 2004:97).

Unfortunately, there have been far or no empirical test in support of the intrinsic merit motive, which makes social responsibility and community development practice of MTN susceptible to the popular accusation of being a gimmick for profitable public relations and marketing strategies. Lautors further argued that is difficulty to disentangle social re3psaonsbility and community development in its present conceptualization form the grits of spin because it is already caught up in the dual logic of intellectual rationalism (i.e. profit maximization) and emotional rationalist (i.e. benevolence). therefore, the continuous tension between the normative and instrumental prospective to social responsibility and community development, tends to suggest that either the current capitalist system is  unfit for normative social responsibility and community development, as it is a propagated, or social responsibility practices and community development specifically “MTN telecommunication” need to be reconstructed in practicable way to  be meaningful top the managers in their day-to-day pursuits of organizational goals and objectives.

 

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The issue of social responsibility practices and community development by organizations where they operate is sometimes overlooked especially in Nigeria. The problems of “MTN” social responsibility practices and community development in Obubra Local Government Area are worth looking at especially how these practices have helped to improving indegene of the host communities, and also how frequent MTN has been complying  to the needs of the most communities as well as the relationship that exists between MTN staff and the host communities. There are some  of the problems needed to look at which have been causing internal problems in the community most areas have been complaining of MTN covering, absent of social responsibility among others. It is on this background that this study sought to investigate with a view to suggest away one.

The main objective of this study is to examine MTN social responsibility practices and community development in Obubra local government area in Cross River State while the specific objectives will be to:
