COMPUTER LITERACY FOR EFFECTIVE USE OF DATABASES AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN FEDERAL UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES IN NORTH WEST NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study examined computer literary for effective use of Databases among undergraduate students in federal university libraries in North West Nigeria. The study was guided by eight research questions. Specifically, the study is designed to determine the level of computer literacy among undergraduate students in the federal university libraries, proffer strategies for enhancing computer literacy among the undergraduate students among others.  Descriptive survey design was used to conduct the study. The population of the study were 300 level undergraduate students in the seven federal university libraries in North West, Nigeria which include, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) Federal University Dutse (FUD) Federal University Dustinma (FUDMA). Federal University Zamfara (FUZ), Usman Danfodio University Sokoto (UDUS) and Federal University Kebbi (FUK). The data for the study was collected using questionnaires and a total of 235 out of 245 questionnaires distributed were returned and found ustable. The data were analyzed using mean, and standard deviation. The result of the study revealed that the undergraduate students should be sensitized on the available of databases and be encouraged to use them. Thus, university managements should pay more attention to students computer literary by making computer education compulsory for all students. The NUC which is the umbrella body of all Nigerian universities should provide academic libraries with fund, ICT infrastructure and training opportunities for both staff and undergraduate students.
