CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background of the Study

HIV/AIDS is one of the greatest health challenges threatening the developing countries today. It leaves indelible marks that are avoidance with proper knowledge and complaint behaviour. Although it is a popular health topic in global media discourse, context-specific and culture-oriented campaigns would impact both urban and rural publics for positive health orientation and behaviour change. These types of communication would be less discriminatory but rather affect receiver’s knowledge attitude and practice irrespective of their socio-demographic, economic and cultural backgrounds. Some modern communication technologies may limit information availability to specific media consumers making developing countries and the grassroots estrange from current trends associated with the epidemic. Little is thus known or documented about context and culture-specific media strategies utilized for easy availability, accessibility and comprehension of HIV messages in a pluralistic country like Nigeria. The present examines the common media platforms used for HIV campaign and identifies the information dissemination strategies, language and subject of HIV/AIDS communication in the Nigerian media. It describes the type of in information available to the teenager and the preventive mechanism adapted to impact on public opinion and human response.

1.2     Statement of the Problem

HIV/AIDS messages have been disseminated to teenager of rural areas across Etinan and Nsit Ibom Communities in Akwa Ibom State. The statement of problem which lies here is that these messages have not been fully disseminated to the teenagers in terms of appropriate media channel. The media have not fully provided a discourse on this topical issue about HIV/AIDS message in order to regulate the attitudes of teenagers in the area concerned. It is based on this that this study intends to look for possible efficient messages via competent channel that would keep aware the teenagers of the understudied communities.

1.3     Objective of the Study

The objective of this study were to:

  1. Find out to what extent HIV/AIDS messages have been disseminated to the teenagers.
  2. Find out if the media have been involved in disseminating HIV/AIDS messages to teenagers.
  3. Find out the reaction of teenager on HIV/AIDS messages.
  4. Find out the appropriate channels that could be used in mobilizing the teenagers on HIV/AIDS.

1.4     Research Question

The research question formulated here are:

  1. What extent has HIV messages been disseminated to teenagers?
  2. Has the media been involved in disseminating HIV/AIDS messages to teenagers?
  3. What are the reactions of teenagers on HIV/AIDS message?
  4. What are the appropriate channels that could be used in mobilizing the teenagers on HIV/AIDS?

 

1.5     Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it intends to highlight more on HIV/AIDS messages and attitudes of teenagers mostly those residing in rural areas. The study also intends to add more to the existing knowledge on this related topic. It is agreed that at the end of this stud, student in the department of mass communication, media experts and teenagers in Etinan and Nsit Ibom shall benefits from this study.

1.6     Delimitation of the Study

The study is delimited to Etinan and Nsit Ibom communities. The study seeks to interview teenagers on HIV/AIDS message and their attitudes based on this pandemia.
